Basil is a herb from the mint family. Originating from the Mediterranean, it is often found in Italian, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese cuisines. Fresh basil is most commonly known as the base of a classic pesto. Dried basil has a distinctive and more concentrated flavour than the fresh version. The golden rule of thumb - 1 teaspoon dried basil:1 tablespoon fresh basil. Dried basil can be used to season pizza, salad, pasta and marinades. It also makes a delicious tea, simply add to a tea strainer with hot water. Basil is known to be good for the respiratory system and can be used to treat nose and throat infections. Store in an airtight container in a cool and dry place.
