Flaxseeds, also known as linseeds, are an excellent source of omega 3 essential fatty acids and a fantastic choice for vegans and vegetarians. They also contain high levels of B-complex vitamins, folate, dietary fibre and protein. They are very good for improving heart health and regulating healthy cholesterol levels. They are a great addition as toppings in yoghurts, desserts or smoothies and work better when they are freshly ground. Flaxseed meal can also be used to make a 'flax egg', a vegan egg replacement used in baked treats, cakes and cookies as it is a fantastic binding agent. To make use 1 tablespoon of flaxseed meal mixed with 3 tablespoons of warm water and let sit for 10 mins. This ratio is equivalent to one egg, so double the quantity per egg in your recipe. Store flaxseeds in an airtight container, in a cool, dry place.
